Purpose of the Martinez/Yazzie Readiness Assessment tool
The Martinez/Yazzie Readiness Assessment tool is grounded in the key findings from Martinez and Yazzie, et al. v. State of New Mexico, as well as current guidance from the NMPED. It is not a data collection tool. Rather, it is a resource designed to support Equity Councils and district or charter leadership in engaging in honest and reflective conversations about programs and services that impact students identified in the court decision as being at-risk. According to the ruling, at-risk students include those who are economically disadvantaged, English Learners, Native American students, and students with disabilities (Martinez and Yazzie, et al. v. State of New Mexico, Decision and Order, p. 3).
How To Use This Readiness Assessment Tool
Equity Councils bring together district and charter staff, community members with knowledge of educational, social, and emotional needs, and representatives of the student groups identified as at-risk. Not all members may be familiar with the education-specific terms used in the tool, so partnering up is encouraged to support shared learning and relationship-building throughout the process. The tool is designed to guide conversations about whether current programs and services are meeting the needs of at-risk students. These discussions may surface areas where improvement is needed and provide a foundation for meaningful dialogue. Insights gained from the assessment help the Equity Council offer advisement to the Superintendent or Charter School Executive Director as they plan for the upcoming school year.
The Readiness Assessment Tool Suggested Practices
- Equity Council members read through the tool completely.
- Equity Councils ask questions and calibrate their understanding of the rating statements in the tool.
- Equity Councils take the readiness assessment.
- Equity Councils formulate their advisements to the Superintendent or Charter School Executive Director.
This process may take one full day or multiple shorter sessions, depending on what works best for the local team. The Superintendent or Executive Director helps determine the approach that makes the process meaningful and productive for everyone involved.
