Computer Science
Computer Science (CS) is the study of how computers and computational systems work, including problem solving, data programs, and the design of digital solutions. As technology continues to transform how we learn, work, and communicate, CS has become an essential skill for students in this era.
To prepare New Mexico students for future academic and career opportunities, the New Mexico Public Education (PED) is committed to expanding high-quality CS education for all learners. Through the New Mexico Computer Science Strategic Plan, PED supports the adoption of state Computer Science Standards, the development of highly qualified CS educators, and the integration of computer science across K–12 classrooms. A main focus of this work is ensuring equitable access to computer science education for every student, regardless of location or background.
Together we are working to equip New Mexico students with computational thinking skills and technical knowledge they need to succeed in this rapidly evolving digital society.
Below are a variety of resources to support educators and administrators in the implementation of the New Mexico Computer Science Standards.
Computer Science Standards
New Mexico computer science instruction is derived from the Computer Science Teacher Association (CSTA) K–12 Computer Science Standards. These nationally recognized standards define grade-banded expectations for student learning and provide a consistent framework for computer science education across K–12.
Computer Science in New Mexico Schools
Computer science instruction in New Mexico may be offered across grade levels through a variety of instructional models. Districts and schools have flexibility in how computer science is implemented, provided instruction aligns with adopted standards and local graduation requirements.
Computer science may be delivered through standalone courses, integrated instruction, or career and technical education pathways, depending on the local context and student needs.
Professional Learning and Support
The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) supports educators and districts in implementing computer science instruction through professional learning opportunities and technical assistance. These supports are intended to build equator capacity and ensure high-quality computer science learning aligned with the adopted standards.
