Charter schools are public schools. While traditional public schools are administered by a school district, charter schools are governed by an independent governing board under a contract with an authorizer.

In New Mexico, charter schools can be authorized by the Public Education Commission (PEC) or a local school board. The NMPED Charter Schools Division (CSD) provides staff support to the PEC, monitors and evaluates PEC-charter schools, and provides training and support to all charter schools administrators and governing board members.

Note: A Charter School Program (CSP) grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to the NMPED for 2017 to 2022 to Open new charter schools and expand access to existing high-quality charter schools. That grant, in the amount of $22.5 million, was managed by the CSD. After a no-cost extension was granted for an additional year, the grant was closed out in 2023. Another New Mexico CSP grant was awarded in 2023 with Public Charter Schools of New Mexico as the fiscal agent. Please see the PCSNM CSP Grant web page for information about that grant.
