In order to fulfill its mission to authorize and support public charter schools for innovative, equitable, choice-driven education where all New Mexico students learn and thrive, the PEC has adopted Rules of Procedure to guide its work.
The PEC annually elects officers who comprise the Executive Committee and adopts an Open Meetings Resolution to ensure compliance with the Open Meetings Act (NMSA 10-15) and transparency in the conduct of its work.
6.2.9 NMAC establishes procedures for the PEC’s review of new charter applications, annual oversight, renewal, and revocation.
PEC subcommittees prepare policies for consideration by the full Commission and Commissioners serve as liaisons to legislative and other committees.
The PEC is administratively attached to the Public Education Department (PED) and has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the PED to establish terms of the relationship, including the PEC budget, a 2% administrative fee is withheld from PEC-authorized schools’ State Equalization Guarantee (SEG) funding. The Charter Schools Division of the PED provides staff support to the PEC.
