After spending the summer learning alongside various teams across the New Mexico Public Education Department, several high school interns wrapped up their experience with a visit to the State Capitol and certificates recognizing the completion of their internships.
Throughout the summer, the students explored careers in state government, worked alongside mentors across multiple departments, and gained professional experience that they’ll carry into college, future careers, and beyond.
“It has been a pleasure to welcome these talented students to the Public Education Department this summer. Their curiosity and willingness to learn have been incredibly impressive, and I have no doubt they each have bright futures ahead,” PED Secretary Mariana D. Padilla said. “They represent the next generation of leaders, and we look forward to seeing the impacts they will make in their communities and beyond.”
See what some of the interns had to say about their experience:
One of Addison’s favorite projects was helping create an intern handbook for future PED interns. The handbook included ideas for educational opportunities, activities, and advice for future interns to come. The interns later presented the project to PED leadership.
The internship also broadened Addison’s perspective on public service. While she doesn’t necessarily see herself working in education, she said the experience sparked a greater interest in state government work.
For Pema, the internship provided lessons that extended well beyond the workplace. While she enjoyed helping design a model internship for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and working on projects across PED, she said the experience strengthened her time management and professionalism skills.
“I learned the importance of being punctual, presenting yourself professionally, and staying organized,” Pema said. “Those are things I’ll definitely carry with me into future jobs.”
Throughout the internship, Sai built relationships with mentors across PED, particularly within the IT and HR teams.
Although Sai plans to pursue a career in the medical field, he said the internship provided valuable professional skills he’ll carry with him regardless of his career.
“I learned valuable skills that I’ll be able to use no matter what field I go into,” he said.
For Donicio, one of the highlights of the internship was touring the State Capitol and learning more about New Mexico’s government.
He also appreciated reconnecting with a former teacher and recognized the support provided to him and the other interns by PED staff.
